I feel less close to the subjects than I might have been and this was unexpected. View all 11 comments. After witnessing so much pain and injustice, in what looked very much like an effort to fight helplessness, and disgust, and protect himself against a cynicism that would have meant the end of his career as a respected war photographer, James Natchwey edited his black and white iferno for a very black book.
Without hope, what is left?
The print quality is so-so, although I think the style was quite intentional. It is a truism to say that a photograph without a caption is to a new audience what a blind person without a dog can be in an unfamiliar space.

The director followed Natchwey around the globe for a whole year. Now that I know you own both, perhaps I will write up a couple of the others first! HIs images hit with force and so does this book.

Inferno by James Nachtwey
Is this book an attempt to counter the homogenization of the media, to make a statement? You are less absorbed infeno engaged as a result. I would also venture that the book could have been edited more tightly, as there are quite a few images that seem weak and out of place. Glass Delusion and the Prism of Photographic Mysticism.
