It was a very unusual sort of face for her. A week or two later she approaches him to write another letter, this time from her lover to her. Yes, yes, I know, I know, of course I waited to see what would come of all this, and I saw and felt that, apparently, I had made a great mistake in suspecting that she was trying to draw me into some game. I couldn’t make up my mind though if Gorky was very sympathetic to Teresa or just had enjoyed working out a very original plot. And we, wrapped in the rags of our virtues, and regarding others through the mist of our self-sufficiency, and persuaded of our universal impeccability, do not understand mazim.

Very moving and shows what lengths some will do to kill their loneliness. And Teresa–that’s me, and he replies to me, and then I write to him again I write to him, and it looks as if he did exist. No doubt by this time she is dead.
The student’s attitude towards her, which is society’s, is that she is sleazy and beneath notice socially.
On some level, the story can also be read as a symbolic one. She is lver, powerfully built, having dark brown hairs, black bushy eyebrows, thick masculine voice, she walks like a cabman and she has immense muscular figure, which inspired the narrator with horror.

To me though, Teresa’s loneliness is not conquered by her fantasy being brought to life with the letters, it is conquered by the approval and empathy of the person who reads the letters to her. She was a Mexican, named Teresa. However, when the woman makes a plea for his help, asking him to write a letter for her, he agrees to it.
