Ba and Moon’s hatouum is still fantastic as is the exaggerated artwork that I witnessed for the first time in Daytripper. Carolina rated it liked it Jan 03, Lovely, transporting comics, very literary, very steeped in Brazilian life and geography, and atmospheric.

A harsh view of family conflict told in shifting pieces. The story-telling and art and just general scope of this book are beautiful and captivating and the reason it deserves as many stars as it does.

Hahoum is not a happy story, which may make it a very difficult read for some, but I do not shy away from bittersweet endings and difficult reads. The ending is fittingly strong and vague – Ba and Moon’s final illustrations in the shell of the old house and gardens, the space where one of the twins stood, creates a haunting final impression and had me flicking back through the book to some of the most memorable scenes. This is the story of Lebonese immigrants who settled in Brazil and stared t a family against the wishes of the husband.
