From a scholarly perspective, Sarris’ method is outrageous – the dividing of film directors into wacky categories like ‘Less than meets the eye’ and ‘Strained seriousness’ – but in spite of just a few judgments that, in the course of time have been shown to be dubious, it works! The most readable overview of directors – didactic but full of humour. More interesting is the treatment of the many directors whose careers began outside of America but was continued within, which has been a staple of Hollywood since almost the beginning.
