Is this feature helpful? One story about a man so obsessed with opera that he starts killing people, finally fdward his favorite soprano she sings, amazingly, ‘the A above high C’ in the throat. At times his stories are beyond comprehension, but perhaps that was his intention–to leave us guessing or use our own imagination to fill in the gaps. The sort of gothic fancifulness easiest to associate with Gorey rather than those stories where the crimes are entirely realistically unpleasant.

I bought this at a big chain shop from their sale table for the price of a cup of gas station coffee. If you’re looking to get into Gorey, though, I’d recommend the first collection, Amphigoreybecause those pieces have ddward narratives and will let you get accustomed to Gorey’s style and sense of humor. At times totally disturbing, and at other times perfectly charming. Read more Read less. I’m sure Gorey is not for gore. We go into the book store. But those looking for strange and unusual and macabre, this is for you.

Things aren’t just there to be funny, there is a real and potentially cathartic understanding of terror and pain and violence beneath it all – but the presentation is eccentrically buttoned-up.

All in all – so glad I finally picked this up. This is the best way to be able to read Edward Gorey now.

Absolutely worth a look for fans, but there’s a fair bit of dross here. Book ratings by Goodreads. The Doubtful Guest – typically cute and creepy and funny but not really horrific, in the setting of a country house; the classic image I have of Gorey.

No trivia or quizzes yet. I’d never read any Edward Gorey before Amphigorey. This compendium is a great introduction to his unique and entertaining works. And amphigory is a nonsense verse or composition, and that is certainly true of Edward Gorey’s works. Would not they have made a pair??!!

The Eclectic Abecedarium – Tiny alphabet, the pictures mere thumbnails, with rhymes. But if you’re only reading and don’t feel you have to produce a right interpretation nothing matters much. Also;a crapaud is a toad,bleu means blue. Rendered in black and white gothic glamour I particularly admired “The Letter Zoo Alphabet” and the way Gorey matched the rhyming nonsense text with the illustrations.

Though the Fetishist fits the early 21st century maxim: As a book, this probably doesn’t rate 4 stars, but for someone who enjoys his art, it’s an enjoyable ‘read’. Be that as it may, the illustrations are worth the glrey of the book alone.
